Cala Gonone Comes Alive for the First Celebration of Summer

During the first week of July, as the tourist season reaches its peak, Cala Gonone welcomes summer with a series of events and beloved traditions that honor its deep connection to the sea.

At the heart of the celebration is the small church of Nostra Signora di Bonaria, patron saint of seafarers. It is here that the community gathers to renew its special bond with the sea—a source of both beauty and prosperity for Cala Gonone.

The most iconic and moving moment of the week is the Procession at Sea.

In this unique ritual, the entire fleet of Cala Gonone’s harbor sets sail. Locals and visitors alike are welcome to join the boats as they head north along the coast, toward the submerged statue of the Madonna of the Abyss. Once there, a floral wreath is cast into the water and gently placed at the statue’s base by a team of divers.

As the boats return to port, fireworks light up the Gulf and Cala Gonone bursts into life with music, dancing, and celebration—a heartfelt moment of unity between guests and the local community.
